He hasn’t been ruled out of Sunday’s playoff game yet, but it’s not looking good for Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Mike Reilly.
Speaking with 630 CHED’s Morley Scott on Monday night, Eskimos general manager Ed Hervey didn’t exactly go into details on the extent of Reilly’s foot injury. He did cast a dark cloud over his starting quarterback’s status, though.
“Right now we’re still gathering information from the medical staff to determine Mike’s availability,” Hervey said. “We do have reason to be concerned, but we’re continuing to gather information and when we know we’ll be able to give more details.”
Hervey didn’t address the stories that have popped up in recent days that suggested Reilly may have suffered a broken bone in his foot in the regular-season finale against the B.C. Lions on Nov. 1.
“I don’t go into details and specifics of the injuries. As I mentioned before we’re trying to gather all the information we can,” Hervey said. “Again, there’s reason to be concerned. Until we get all the facts, we won’t make any more comments at this time.”
The Eskimos’ first practice of the week is on Wednesday morning. Asked by Scott if Reilly would be participating in practice, Hervey only said, “we’ll find out his availability in the next few days.”
Hervey also addressed the status of third-string quarterback Pat White, saying that he was currently going through concussion protocol. Offensive lineman Selvish Capers, Hervey said, is day-to-day. White took a hit to the head in Saturday’s season-finale loss to the Riders. Capers injured his groin in the first half of the game.
The Eskimos dressed Matt Scott as their third-stringer in Regina. He signed with the team on Oct. 7 and has spent that time on the team’s practice roster. If Reilly and White were unable to play, Matt Scott would theoretically shift into the game. That would leave the team in need of a third quarterback. In that situation, Hervey said “we have a contingency plan in place.”
“Whoever is under centre, this team will be ready to play,” Hervey said.
In Regina, Riders head coach Corey Chamblin said on Monday that quarterback Darian Durant would be on the active roster for this week’s game. Durant hasn’t played since Sept. 7, when he tore a tendon in the elbow of his throwing arm. Recovered from surgery, Durant’s role in Sunday’s game hasn’t been determined yet.
