Leon Mackey is the newest member of the Edmonton Eskimos.
The team announced the six-foot-five, 260-pound defensive end’s signing to their practice this morning, while letting go of another DE, in Chaz Sutton.
Mackey spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons at Texas Tech, where he started six of 21 games. He had 25 solo tackles and four tackles for a loss in that time.
Mackey is out on the field this morning, learning the lay of the land in his first CFL stint. Also at practice this morning is Joe Burnett. The cornerback has had a tough go of it this season, since his six-game stint on the injured list that started in Week 7. Since then he’s been on the one-game injured list, getting into practices some weeks but not being ready on game day. Burnett hasn’t played since July 24, against Calgary.
In their first practice back from their second bye week of the season, the Eskimos are looking to replace the injured Simeon Rottier. The team’s starting left guard all season, Rottier was lost against the Riders when he injured his left knee. Selvish Capers has been lining up at left guard so far in today’s practice.
Check back later today on the Journal’s site for a more complete breakdown on the search to replace Simeon Rottier and a first-day-of-school style recap of how all of the players spent their bye week.
