Eskimos make their first cut of training camp

In the same way that sports announcers say it isn’t a playoff series until each team loses at home, you could say that it’s not really a training camp until a team makes its first in-camp cut.

The Edmonton Eskimos dove into that pool on Thursday morning, announcing the release of import wide receiver and return man Joe Adams. The 24-year-old signed with the Esks on April 28, after their Florida mini-camp. He was an All-American in 2011 with the Arkansas Razorbacks and was a fourth-round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers in the 2012 NFL draft.

Esks GM Ed Hervey and head coach Chris Jones made a pair of cuts on Saturday, during the team’s medicals, shedding non-import linebacker and special teamer Mike Cornell and import slotback Marcus Henry before the pads went on. Henry was signed by Ottawa on Wednesday.

Day 5 of training camp has the same group of players missing out that has been all week. Linebacker/safety Mike Miller, defensive back Desmond Marrow, centre Gord Hinse, defensive tackle Almondo Sewell and defensive end Willie Jefferson are out of action again on Thursday. Hinse remains on the Esks disabled list, while DB Domonique Johnson and DE Cameron Sheffield are on the suspended list.
